The Rotunda Gallery, 33 Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights, will be hosting Sound Bites, an evening of short experimental music performances. The event, to be held on May 4, 2000, at 8pm, is in conjunction with the gallery's current exhibition, Subject to Sound. Organized by guest curators Andrea Lilienthal and Jean-Paul Maitinsky, Subject to Sound runs through May 20, 2000. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, Noon - 5pm and Saturday, 11am - 4pm. Admission is free. Information: 718-875-4047; or www.brooklynx.org/rotunda.

Sound Bites performers will include David Weinstein and Tim Spelios, who mix found and appropriated music and noise with fast and cheap technology; Ken Butler, who creates his own instruments from household objects, sports equipment and tools; acclaimed keyboardist Kathleen Supové will play Randall Woolf's Adrenaline Revival, with keyboard and digital effects processor; Gene Pool will present his bittersweet childhood memoir, 200 Times, set to a lush musical backdrop created by Tim Spelios from looped CDs and percussion.

The exhibition, Subject to Sound, explores the expressive and formal dimensions of sound through the work of contemporary artists who use sound as a medium. Like most urban settings, the Rotunda Gallery is surrounded by a cacophony of sound—from the wail of the warning alarm at the parking garage across the street to the engines of cars and trucks passing through on one of Brooklyn Heights' major thoroughfares. Rather than exclude this ever-present background from the contemplation of artwork, the artists in Subject to Sound call our attention to the urban orchestra surrounding the gallery. These interactive, multi-media installations challenge the senses and awaken the listener to the world around them.

Artists in the exhibition include: Ken Butler, Bill Jones & Ben Neill, Scott Konzelmann, William & Kathleen Laziza, Kevin & Jennifer McCoy, Ken Montgomery, Gene Pool, John Roach & James Rouvelle, David Weinstein.

The Rotunda Gallery, housed in an award-winning space designed by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson, showcases the work of Brooklyn artists. The Rotunda Gallery's educational programs reach 6,000 students each year with gallery visits and in-school artmaking projects. The Rotunda Gallery is a project of the not-for-profit BRIC/Brooklyn Information & Culture, Inc. (Nanette Rainone, President)

Located in Brooklyn Heights, just over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, the Gallery is also easily accessible by public transportation. It is a short walk from the 2,3; 4,5; M; N or R trains at the Court Street/Borough Hall station; or the A, C trains at High Street.
