I started working with fabrics rather thoughtlessly, but I have continued using it because while it seems so delicate, it stands up to a lot of punishment. They unravel a little, they wrinkle sometimes, but they never get permanent dents or crack all over the floor. Flexibility is the strength here. All of the pieces in this show have travelled somewhere on the train, in a laundry cart, bus rolled up in my bag with a needle or some markers. They're ready at a moment's notice. I like this. The content of these "collages" also reflects this simultaneous strength and vulnerability, but that is open to interpretation.
I grew up in
the general area of the United States and
currently live in Brooklyn with a large dog. I drew as a child, and as a
teenager and when I went to college to become a teacher I changed one of my
majors to art so I would have enough time to continue. We drew a lot of still
lifes and nudes. I continued in my
basement after school for years, occasionally venturing out to hang something
somewhere. Again I planned to go back to school and rather than studying
education, I applied for an art therapy program and moved from Nebraska to New
York. Since then, if you've been looking closely, you might have seen some of
my work on Bleeker St, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Chelsea, the LES, the
Berkshires, Boston, or North Carolina. AHA! Free from the basement!
